The Site

For more than a century and a half, GeelongPort has been a vital component of its community and landscape, playing a significant role in the local economy and social structure. Facilitating trade for numerous major industries in and around Geelong and serving as a hub for bulk commodity imports and exports for Victoria, the port remains a cornerstone of regional commerce.

Notably, in collaboration with Spirit of Tasmania, GeelongPort undertook a major two-year project to substantially redevelop the Corio Quay South precinct to incorporate the new home of the iconic passenger ship Spirit of Tasmania, replacing its previous home of nearly 40 years at Station Pier in Port Melbourne.

The Challenge

Operating under the regulations stipulated in the Maritime Transport Security Act 2003 and its corresponding directives, GeelongPort has undergone remarkable transformations to adapt to evolving needs.

Additionally, compliance with security regulations for Australia’s ports is paramount. GeelongPort has designated restricted land and sea zones within its jurisdiction. Under the Maritime Transport and Offshore Facilities Security Act 2003, unauthorised access to designated areas is prohibited, and stringent penalties are in place to deter infringements.

Managed by a dedicated project team, the expansive 12-hectare precinct’s construction involved multiple phases, including marine infrastructure, land-side construction, security infrastructure, and the development of passenger facilities. The resulting state-of-the-art terminal boasts amenities such as a new vehicle marshalling area, additional parking facilities, staff and crew accommodation, and recreational areas for Spirit of Tasmania passengers.

The Solution

Zenitel products are the dominant critical communications product for seagoing vessels worldwide and the pre-eminent brand of choice on land where clear, reliable security communications are important, particularly in environments where exposure to the elements and background noise pose a challenge.

For that reason, TCIS-2 intercom stations and Zenitel remote relays were specified and integrated onto the network to enhance security communications at designated access control stations, including entry and exit points for onshore car parks and Spirit of Tasmania staff & crew accommodation facilities.
